SCREENING #1 13 & 14 december 2003
FOR THE FIRST TIME IN BELGIUM! The Kunsthalle Lophem in cooperation with SWR Fernsehen Aktuelle Kultur takes great pleasure in inviting you to: 6 HOURS NON STOP PROJECTION of the 50 best nominated media art works from the international media art price 2003. Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 December 2003, continuously from 11 a.m. till 11 p.m. Free entrance but reservation advisable (info@kunsthallelophem.be) 
For the eleventh time already the ZKM (Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe) and the SWR (Südwestrundfunk Baden-Baden) have organised this international competition. This year's theme is "The designed life - between computer games, cyber sex and robotic art". From computer games to genetic engineering, from everyday chatting on the Internet to business contacts, we see the increase of intelligent tools; more and more we live in a virtual, designed and artificial world. The ZKM received no less than 635 media art works from which the jury has selected the 50 best nominated works. The participating media artists mainly come from Germany, Switzerland and Austria. From the USA, Finland and the Netherlands several videos have been selected, but also Argentina, Brazil, China, Canada, Poland, Rumania, Russia, Spain, Slovakia and Slovenia have been nominated each with one video. Cubes, dreams, chrome-shining organisms and hyper realistic women's faces are the most remarkable motives in the nominated works. Trends in the picture design are Flash animations, silver computer animations, kaleidoscopic and mirror effects. Video games have often been used as a parody or profound video; there were few entries for cyber sex whereas robotic art is particularly questioned in the installations.
